HCS® Economy-grade Optical Fiber

HCS-200 Optical Fiber is a low-cost, economy-grade patch cord option for VIS-NIR applications. HCS-200 is available in only one diameter size -- 200 µm -- and is recommended for only the least technically demanding applications.

There are significant differences between the HCS-200 Optical Fiber and Ocean Optics Unjacketed Bulk Optical Fiber. Consider:

• HCS-200 has an orange-colored outer sheathing. Our standard optical fibers are blue, with color bands at one end of the assembly.
• HCS-200 is silica-core, polymer-clad optical fiber. Our standard fiber is silica-core, silica-clad fiber. The polymer cladding on an HCS-200 optical fiber can be chemically removed for applications such as evanescent wave spectroscopy.  
• HCS-200 optical fiber has numerical aperture values ranging from 0.37 to 0.44. Our standard fiber has 0.22 NA, and is far more compatible with the optical design of our miniature fiber optic spectrometers.

User's Tip: HCS-200 and Ocean Optics standard optical fibers cannot be coupled successfully. An incompatible numerical aperture for each of the fiber types makes coupling them unworkable.
