Fluorescence Flow Injection Analysis System

The FIA-PMT-FL is a highly sensitive -- to parts per trillion -- photomultiplier-based flow through detection system ideally suited for ultra-low fluorescence, chemiluminescence or bioluminescence measurements. The system's heavy-duty, chemically resistant housing is built to withstand industrial environments.

The FIA-PMT-FL has flow-through capability, but also accepts standard 1-cm path length cuvettes for manual measurements. The FIA-PMT-FL is $6,495.

System Configuration

The FIA-PMT is built to order with either an internal excitation lamp or with an optical fiber interfacing to an external lamp. Excitation lamp source options include tungsten, mercury vapor, LEDs and laser diodes. Emission and excitation filters are mounted in accessible slots inside the enclosure, allowing for easy removal or exchange. The system uses an internal 25 mm flow cell.

Excitation Source Options

Internal excitation source options: Laser diodes (532 nm, 635 nm, 650 nm)
Quartz tungsten lamp (440-750 nm)
UV LED lamp (365-410 nm)
Various Visible LED lamps
Fiber optic excitation source options: Deuterium lamp (200-400 nm)
Laser diodes (532 nm, 635 nm, 650 nm)
Quartz tungsten lamp (440-750 nm)

System Operation

The FIA-PMT-FL plugs into the RS-232 serial port of a personal computer and comes with Windows-based software that allows the user to set the integration time and voltage counts, and to obtain time histories of the measurements, both plotted and tabulated. Also, the software can automatically create calibration curves, and control a host of additional devices including various syringe and peristaltic pumps, injection valves, selection valves, and autosamplers (please inquire for details).  For users who desire to control the PMT-FL from their own software project, included is an ActiveX control for use with Visual Basic, VC++, LabvVew, or nearly any other ActiveX- compatible development environment.

Typical Applications

Fluorometric ammonium analysis. Use the FIA-PMT-FL for the orthophtaldialdehyde (OPA) method for NH4 assays, to ppb sensitivity. Results achieved with 365 nm LED excitation source with broadband 410-490 nm emission filter.

Fluorescein-based assays. Use the FIA-PMT-FL to measure to ppb sensitivity. Results achieved with Blue LED excitation source and broadband 510-590 nm emission filter.

Additional Options

  • Heated internal flow cell -- ambient to 60 °C, +/- 0.5 °C accuracy
  • Dual-head PMT -- measure two excitation wavelength bands simultaneously
